The Basics

The Beaches (also referred to as the Beach) is located 20 minutes east of downtown Toronto.  Located along Lake Ontario, the Beaches hosts kilometers of beaches, a boardwalk, and biking and rollerblading paths.  The Beaches homes include Victorian mansions, as well as 19th-century cottages and beach houses.  The Beaches is chock full of boutiques, spas, cafes, and pubs.   Many people consider the Beaches to be the best of both worlds, a small beach town combined with city living.  The Beaches has a walk score of 88.  

Population Statistics

The Beaches neighbourhood is made up of the following age groups:

Children 0 – 14 – 18 %;

Youth 15 – 24 – 10 %;

Working age 25 – 64 – 61 %;

Seniors 65 + - 11 %.

The Beaches has a nice blend of 35 % singles, 34 % families, and 31 % couples.  

Beaches Homes

Beaches homes come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.  The majority of Beaches homes are in apartment buildings less than 5 stories high.  In second place are single detached houses, followed by semidetached houses.  There are very few row houses, detached duplexes, or apartments more than five stories in the Beaches neighborhood.  67 % of residents own their homes, and 33 % rent.  Most Beaches homes were built pre-1980.

Beaches Schools

The Toronto District School Board serves the Beaches neighborhood.  There are over 15 high schools and elementary schools in the Beaches.  Additionally, there are several Catholic schools in the neighborhood.  Fun fact: Keanu Reeves, Kiefer Sutherland, and John Candy attended school in the Beaches while growing up. 

Public Transportation

There are three north-south bus lines serving the Beaches.  Additionally, streetcars run east-west along Queen Street East and Kingston Road.
