Want Your Place to Appear Bigger? Embrace the Light!

Whether you are planning to list your home for sale, or just purchased a cozy new space if you are looking to make your place appear bigger, embrace the light.

Consider Mirrors

Many people will argue mirrors went out of style in the ‘80s, but a well-placed mirror can still do wonders to open up space.  For example, if you have a small bedroom, consider placing a large mirror on the wall next to the window.  This allows the mirror to catch the angle of the natural light, and bounce it into the entire room.  The larger the mirror, the greater the illusion of space it creates.  In a room that gets little to no sun, such as a room with northern exposure, consider placing a mirror opposite the window for the illusion of additional space.

Clean Your Light Covers and Reconsider Your Light Bulb Choices

When was the last time you dusted your lamp shades?  Or washed the globes that cover the light bulbs in your home?  Or even dusted the light bulbs themselves?  All these things gather dust and dirt, limiting the amount of light being emitted into a room.  By making sure your globes are squeaky clean, and keeping dust off the lamp shades and bulbs, you brighten the room.  Additionally, consider full spectrum light bulbs, rather than keeping the orange glow of regular bulbs.  Full spectrum light bulbs simulate natural outdoor light.  In addition to directly mimicking natural light, it reduces glare and eye strain and makes work environments more productive.  You may also consider increasing the wattage in your lightbulbs, to create more light for your space.

Evaluate your Window Treatments

Sure, you may want room darkening curtains in your bedroom while you sleep., but make sure to pull back the curtains during the daytime hours.  Additionally, consider sheers or lace curtains for privacy in your main rooms.  These curtains prevent outside curious eyes from seeing in but allow the majority of light to still come through.  Finally, open your blinds or shades during the day to maximize the amount of sunshine in your home.
