Twice as many Ottawans bought homes in Gatineau area in 2020, new report shows

The number of Ottawa households electing to hop over the provincial border and purchase single-family homes in the Gatineau area nearly doubled in 2020, an increase the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation chalks up to the attraction of a more affordable market in an era of economic uncertainty.

A new report from the federal Crown corporation details how, over the previous five years, Ottawans accounted for an average of six per cent of single-family homes purchased in the Gatineau area annually. (That area includes the City of Gatineau, plus outlying municipalities such as Chelsea, Thurso, Pontiac and Val-des-Monts.)
